Location from an IP: how it is derived, why it misses

How IP geolocation actually works, where the data comes from, the four classic reasons it shows the wrong city, and our five-source consensus approach.
Where the location data comes from
No coordinates are written inside an IP address. Geolocation databases (MaxMind, IP2Location, ipinfo…) combine which provider an address block is allocated to, where that provider deploys it, and measurement/declaration data to produce an estimate. What you see is an inference, not a record.
Why it misses
Four classic reasons: the provider moved the block to another city and the database lags; behind CGNAT the exit point is the operator's hub city, not yours (the mobile user in Ankara who "appears" in Istanbul); a VPN/proxy exits from another country by design; and databases update on different schedules — correct in one, stale in another.
That last one is why our tool exists in its current form: we query five sources in parallel and pick city/region/country by consensus vote. A single database's mistake cannot decide the result, and the source list is printed under the result.

My location is wrong; can I get it corrected?
Databases have correction forms (ipinfo, MaxMind), but the underlying allocation belongs to your ISP; if the block moves, estimates drift again. For a specific service's region lock, contacting that service's support is usually faster.
Two sites show me in two different cities at once; which is right?
Both are "right" per their own database. Different sites use different databases with different update cycles; our five-source consensus exists precisely to smooth that inconsistency.
