What an IP address is, who assigns it, and what websites can learn from yours. Public vs private IPs, in plain language.
Definition: the internet's addressing system
When you connect to a site, the answer needs somewhere to return to; that is the IP address. Your ISP assigns you a public IP, and every server you visit sees it — it is the first thing our tool shows you.
Inside your home there is a second layer: the router hands devices private addresses like 192.168.x.x and gathers them all behind one public IP (NAT). So the IP in your phone's settings differing from what websites see is entirely normal.
What websites learn from your IP
Roughly four things: a country/city estimate (not an exact address — we explain why it misses), your ISP and network number (ASN), whether the connection exits through a datacenter/VPN, and your approximate timezone. Identity details — name, street address — cannot be read from an IP; only your ISP can map that, under legal process.
Why care?
Three practical scenarios: hitting a "not available in your region" wall is your IP location at work; setting up remote access to home (camera, desktop) requires knowing your public IP (and whether you are behind CGNAT); and investigating a suspicious connection starts with the IP's owner and type. Is my IP address fixed or does it change?
Most home connections are dynamic: the address can change after a router restart or periodically. See the static vs dynamic guide.
Is it dangerous if someone knows my IP?
Not by itself: every site you visit sees it, and the whole address space is scanned constantly. Risk comes from services left open on your network (unsecured cameras, open ports), not from the address being known. A patched router and closed ports are the real defence.
